Imagine a world where machines can think and learn like humans. A world where students can have personalized learning experiences, and teachers can focus on what matters the most – inspiring and guiding their students. This is the world that AI chatbots are creating, and it’s a reality that’s already being explored at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.
Bandung, Indonesia – A workshop on creating AI chatbots using pre-trained GPT-4 models was a resounding success at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI).

Held on October 21, 2024 at the FPBS Building, 4th floor Room 19, the workshop drew a diverse crowd of 57 participants from various study programs, namely Electrical Engineering, English Language and Literature, Mathematics Education, and Linguistics, and even a high school student who happened to be the youngest participant in the workshop, Ryan Emillio M.
The workshop was organized by the Bandung Society for Informatics, Electrical Engineering, and Robotics (BSIEER) in collaboration with the English Language and Literature Study Program of UPI. The trainer, Mr. Diki Fahrizal, a talented graduate from the Electrical Engineering Study Program of UPI, guided participants through the process of building interactive AI chatbots using Python and the VS Code text editor. Currently, Mr. Diki Fahrizal has been involved in high impact research and has published Scopus-indexed articles under the research team of Prof. Dr. Jaja Kustija, M.Sc. for the area of distance control and measurement from the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Education (FPTI), Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.
In the workshop, the participants learned to install and utilize essential libraries, such as PyAudio, tkinter, and speech recognition to enhance the chatbot’s functionality. The workshop provided hands-on experience, allowing participants to experiment with different coding techniques and observe the resulting chatbot interactions.
The workshop was met with enthusiasm and positive feedback from participants. Many expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn about AI and its applications in chatbot development. “This workshop was incredibly informative and inspiring,” said one participant. “I had no idea how complex and fascinating the process of creating an AI chatbot could be.”
The workshop also garnered praise from university officials. Prof. Eri Kurniawan, Ph.D., Head of the English Language and Literature Study Program, commended the organizers for their efforts in providing students with valuable learning experiences. “Workshops like this are essential for equipping our students with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Dean for Student Affairs of the Faculty of Language and Literature Education, Yanty Wirza, Ph.D., echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. “The workshop was a great example of how different fields can come together to create something truly groundbreaking,” she said.
Ms. Atifah Nabila Nurfaiza, President of BSIEER, expressed her satisfaction with the event’s outcome. “We were thrilled to see so many students from various backgrounds participating in the workshop,” she said. “It’s a testament to the growing interest in AI and its potential applications.”
The workshop concluded with a lively question-and-answer session moderated by Ms. Arletta Ratu Bertantra and Ms. Prita Armara. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions about the coding process, potential challenges, and future developments in AI chatbot technology.
The workshop was held in response to the rapid advancements in information and communication technology (ICT) and computer science. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key area of focus, with growing demand for experts in the field. Chatbots, as intelligent virtual assistants, have become increasingly prevalent in various industries, from customer service to education. By equipping students with the knowledge and skills to develop AI chatbots, the workshop aimed to contribute to the development of AI talent in Indonesia and position UPI as a leader in AI education.
